Interview with Klara Štumpfl and Rok Podjavoršek

ELEKTRO ŠTUMPFL, based in Slovenj Gradec, has been present on the Slovenian market for more than five decades. Its roots date back to 1969, when Albert Štumpfl Sr. began repairing electric motors and other electrical equipment. Over the years, the company has grown from a small garage workshop into a modern electrical engineering enterprise operating in four key areas: building electrical installations, marine electrical systems, low-voltage switchboards, and motorhome electrification.

A particularly important part of the company’s business is the marine sector, where it has been developing and manufacturing electrical systems for vessels built by renowned shipyards in Slovenia and abroad since 2001.

Val Navtika:

ELEKTRO ŠTUMPFL is a well-known name in the field of electrical engineering. How would you describe the company’s story and its key development milestones?

Klara Štumpfl:

Our story began in 1969, when everything started with the repair of electric motors, household appliances, and other electrical devices. Over the decades, we have grown from a small garage-based business into a successful and technologically advanced company.

Today, our business is built on expertise, reliability, and a personalized approach to every client. One of our major milestones was entering the marine industry in 2001, followed later by our expansion into the motorhome sector. Our strengths lie in decades of experience, in-house development and production of components, and a close, customer-focused approach.

Val Navtika:

When and how did you enter the marine sector?

Rok Podjavoršek:

We officially consider 2001 as the beginning, when we produced our first wiring harness for a vessel. The initiative emerged from the company’s internal development and its connection to the sailing world.

Initially, we collaborated with shipyards such as Elan Marine, Pičuljan Marine, and SAS Vektor. Today, we also work with Greenline Yachts, Pegasus Yachts, Makai Yachts, and other respected manufacturers. The marine segment has become a very important part of our business.

Val Navtika:

What exactly is a wiring harness?

Rok Podjavoršek:

A wiring harness is an assembly of multiple wires routed through a protective conduit or sleeve, connecting the power source to various electrical consumers via an electrical panel or distribution board.

When working on a vessel, we first perform precise measurements and then determine the appropriate conductor sizes and color coding based on voltage, power consumption, and cable run length. Standards for 230-volt systems are particularly strict, and we consistently adhere to them in all marine applications.

Val Navtika:

How important is the quality of electrical wiring on a vessel?

Rok Podjavoršek:

It is extremely important. The marine environment is harsh on electrical systems, which is why the installation must be carried out to the highest standards.

We use high-quality tinned conductors, appropriate protection systems, and properly sized cables, especially in exposed areas such as the engine room. High-quality wiring is important not only for functionality and aesthetics, but above all for safety.
